Typhoon Haiyan formed in the western Pacific Ocean on November 3, 2013 and quickly strengthened into a super typhoon as it churned toward the Palau and the Philippines. Haiyan’s estimated sustained wind speed of 195 mph (miles per hour) made it the equivalent of a major Category 5 storm on the National Hurricane Center’s Saffir-Simpson Scale, and one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever on Earth. After making landfall in the central Philippines on November 8, 2013, it continued into the South China Sea and weakened significantly before making a second landfall in Vietnam.
